MINDSCREEN FILM INSTITUTE (MFi)

Mindscreen Film Institute (MFI) was founded in 2006 by acclaimed cinematographer, director, actor, and educationist Rajiv Menon, with a vision to create a learning environment where aspiring filmmakers could develop both the craft and the creative thinking essential to cinema. Over the past two decades, that vision has evolved into a respected institution dedicated to film education, practical training, and the continuous pursuit of cinematic excellence.

Today, as MFI celebrates 20 years of film education, the institute remains committed to preparing the next generation of filmmakers through an approach rooted in hands-on experience, industry relevance, and a deep understanding of the art and craft of cinema.

At the heart of MFI is its flagship Cinematography programme, recognised for its rigorous and industry-oriented approach. The programme is designed to bring together technical proficiency, creative expression, and practical experience, enabling students to understand cinematography not simply as a technical discipline, but as a powerful language of visual storytelling.

Students gain extensive hands-on experience with professional-grade equipment and filmmaking practices, supported by experienced faculty members with industry expertise. This immersive learning environment encourages students to experiment, develop their visual sensibility, and build the technical confidence required to navigate the demands of professional filmmaking.

Over the past 20 years, MFI has completed 40 batches in Cinematography and 25 batches in Filmmaking and Direction, welcoming students from across India and beyond.

The institute has built a diverse and growing community of filmmakers whose work extends across the Indian and international film and media industries. MFI alumni have contributed to more than 550 feature films and web series across multiple Indian languages, with many establishing careers as cinematographers, directors, editors, and other creative and technical professionals.

Their journeys represent the breadth of opportunities that film education can open up—and reflect the values that MFI seeks to cultivate: creative excellence, technical expertise, professional discipline, and a lasting passion for cinema.

From its beginnings in 2006 to its 20th anniversary in 2026, MFI’s story has been defined by a simple belief: cinema is best understood by experiencing it.

Through practical learning, close engagement with the craft, and exposure to professional filmmaking environments, MFI continues to provide aspiring filmmakers with the foundation to discover their voice, refine their skills, and pursue meaningful careers in cinema.
