7 Tips to Buy A Helmet That Complements Your Motorcycle

11/19/2020

For many of us, owning a motorcycle is an achievement that we aim for from a very early point in our lives. Depending on incomes, people have aspirations to own the best motorcycle money can buy for them. As a result, motorcycles are a reflection of the person’s achievements, which is why every motorcyclist is very proud of his/her ride and wants to do everything to complement it in the best way possible. In addition to upgrading the motorcycle with aftermarket gadgets and accessories, one of the most important things that motorcyclists do after purchasing a motorcycle is to get a branded two-wheeler helmet.

If you are in the market looking for a branded motorcycle helmet to complement your motorcycle or two-wheeler, here are a few things to consider.

Check for free helmets

Before heading out to the motorcycle accessories shop near you, check whether the motorcycle dealer offers any free helmet with the bike because that is a common trend among all manufacturers across India. In fact, it is a mandatory requirement instituted by the Government of India to encourage people to wear motorcycle helmets while riding a two-wheeler. If you already are getting a good quality motorcycle helmet then you might probably want to hold on to your decision of buying a new helmet for the time being. You might want to know that these free motorcycle helmets are manufactured by reputed manufacturers and do come with the ISI safety mark which means you can safely use the product without any concern.

Check the color

Now coming to the point of purchasing a motorcycle helmet separately, the first thing that you need to think about is to ask about the brand color of a motorcycle and find a helmet that matches it. For example, if you are purchasing a Kawasaki motorcycle then you might want to check out green color motorcycle helmets, and similarly if you are going for a KTM motorcycle an orange motorcycle helmet might be the best choice for you. Already the top helmet manufacturers in India are designing helmets for these top motorcycle brands so it should not be a problem to find a helmet that completely matches your bike’s color. Having said that, do not get too stuck with the color of the helmet because that is a secondary consideration, the primary being safety and comfort that the helmet must provide.

Match the cost

The cost of the helmet must be commensurate with the cost of your motorcycle. If you bought a motorcycle for Rs.2,00,000 you need a helmet that costs at least Rs.3000, similarly if your motorcycle costs Rs.60,000 you can purchase a helmet that costs Rs.800 or a little more. There is no hard and fast rule to follow regarding the cost of the helmet versus the cost of a motorcycle, but it is a general guideline that many motorcyclists follow anyway.

Weigh out the options/features

Now coming to the most important point, the safety features and comfort features of the helmet must be your primary concern when choosing a brand-new helmet for your daily commuting or touring needs. If you plan on going out on long distance trips quite often then you might prefer using a full-face helmet with dual visors which comes with an additional sun visor for keeping the eyes cool while riding in sunny bright conditions. In addition to that many motorcycle helmets also come with Bluetooth modules which will allow you to take calls and listen to music during the ride and stay in contact with other members of the riding group if that is your thing. Take into account all the safety and comfort features of the product before investing any money in it. Apart from full face helmets, there are open-face helmets and modular helmets all of which are good candidates for your consideration. The modular helmet is the best choice if you want a product that can be easily transformed from an open-face helmet to a full-face helmet with the flick of a few levers. This makes modular helmets the perfect thing for using in all weather conditions either summer or winter.

Find out what your peers are using

If you are unable to make up your mind regarding whatever you should buy for your motorcycle a great way to gather intelligence is by checking out what your peers are using. In many cases most motorcyclists using a similar brand of vehicle will have already purchased a helmet to complement their bikes and you can take the information from them to buy a motorcycle helmet for your own needs. One thing to keep in mind when checking out helmets used by other people is that your needs are unique and therefore you should not simply purchase an open face helmet or a full-face helmet because someone else has done that. Instead of doing that, find out what your lifestyle choices are and what you expect out of the helmet which will help you make a better-informed decision.

Don't compromise on the safety features

The most crucial aspect of purchasing a brand-new motorcycle helmet is to focus on the safety features of the product rather than on just the looks. Colors, designs and decals are fine but if the product fails to keep you safe in the event of an accident then nothing else matters. Make sure that the product is approved by the relevant safety authorities in your country. In case of India, you should be looking for the ISI mark on the backside of the helmet, along with the weight of the helmet clearly mentioned on it. Some other important safety features of a helmet are a hypoallergenic inner liner, scratch-resistant visor for clarity in all conditions, and a quick release strap mechanism. The outer shell Should be made of high-grade abs material and inertial should be made of high-quality expanded polystyrene form to prevent the impact of a mechanical force during an accident.

Pick an upgradable helmet

Last but not the least, when purchasing a new helmet make sure to check out options that are upgradable. For example, after using the helmet for a period of 2 to 3 years, it is highly recommended that you upgrade the inner lining and visor of the helmet with new replacement parts to keep the product as useful as a new helmet. This can be done only in a helmet that comes with replaceable inner parts.
