The acronym ISI stands for Indian Standards Institute, and it refers to a certificate scheme operated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The process of obtaining the ISI Mark is known as ISI certification. While ISI certification is typically not mandatory, it serves as evidence that an electrical device or appliance is deemed safe for usage. The ISI mark is the standards compliance mark for industrial goods since 1955, allowing a product to display the mark if it meets the Indian Standards set by BIS, which is the national standards body in India. An ISI certificate is mandatory for approx 400 products; a manufacturer cannot produce or sell their products in India without an ISI mark on them if they fall under the ISI certification mandatory list.
