Facelift
Surgery: What You Need to Know
Our face is a significant part of our identity. As
we age, it starts looking tired, haggard and worn out. This can take a toll on
our self confidence. Thankfully, there
are many modern cosmetic procedures that can help restore our natural, youthful
appearance by making the skin tighter, firmer and fresher looking. One such
popular procedure is Facelift surgery.
What
is facelift surgery?
Facelift
surgery is also known as rhidectomy. This procedure is
performed under anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours depending on additional
treatments that are combined with it. In fact; many patients also opt to undergo a brow lift, eyelid
surgery (to correct drooping eyelids), or facial liposculpture
etc. along with a facelift surgery.
Eligibility
for facelift surgeries
The patient’s individual circumstances as well as
facial characteristics are the primary factors that determine the eligibility
for this surgery. These are evaluated by the cosmetic surgeon and it is
important to consider his advice and recommendations before deciding to opt for
any such invasive procedures. That being said; many people aged between 45 and
65 years (and even older) have been known to benefit from rhidectomy. In
general, facelift surgery is not recommended to patients who are:
- Medically or psychologically unstable
- Have high blood pressure or diabetes.
- May be prone to postoperative complications (such as smokers)
- Not in general good health.
Facelift surgery is generally very safe. However, as with any other surgery, some complications such as bleeding, bruising, swelling and scarring are likely. In a few cases, there may be complications from anesthesia or injury to the facial nerves controlling the muscles. Most of these effects are temporary and generally disappear within a few days of the procedure.
Major benefits of facelift procedure
- One of the most significant advantages of facelift surgery is the return of youthful appearance. As we age, the facial skin loses its facial fat and elasticity leading to a tired and sagging appearance. During the facelift surgical procedure, this sagging skin is carefully trimmed and tightened for a youthful look.
- The second major advantage of modern facelift is the tightening of underlying facial muscles. The underlying structures of the face, also called SMAS or superficial musculo-aponeurotic system also weakens with age and starts to sag. The advanced facelift procedures can help rearrange these muscles for a youthful composition.
- Furthermore, this surgery can help re-establish a smoother appearance in one’s cheeks and eyelids and also create an attractive jaw line contour by eliminating jowls and smoothing wrinkles in the neck region.
- All the benefits above combine to give you one very important thing and that is a better quality of life. When you undergo a facelift, you have heightened self confidence. Such a surgery can allow your personality to shine through and allow you to age more gracefully in the years to come.
