There are two main IELTS tests: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

IELTS Academic, which is needed to get a study permit in English-speaking countries, is accepted by hundreds of academic institutions worldwide. Also, the IELTS General Training exam is taken by many immigration agencies around the globe. The IELTS test generally has four modules which are described below.
IELTS Listening:
As the name suggests, this module assesses the listening skills of an individual. The listening test contains 40 questions divided into four sections of 10 questions each. The test-takers listen to multiple audios for 30 minutes, based on which they have to write answers.
IELTS Reading:
This module checks the reading level of the test taker. The reading module is divided into three sections which contain comprehension passages. Students are asked to answer a particular set of questions based on reading comprehension passages. There are 40 questions that the test taker has to attempt in one hour.
IELTS Writing:
The IELTS writing module comprises two tasks. Candidates are assessed based on four parameters, namely Coherence and Cohesion, Task Response, Grammatical Range and Accuracy and Lexical Resource.
Task 1 is different from the IELTS Academic and General Training tests. In the IELTS academic, task one can be a graph or a map/picture, and the test taker has to explain it in their own words with no less than 150 words.
Whereas, in the IELTS general training exam, the candidate has to write a letter which can be formal, semi-formal or informal, as a part of the task one answer. This task is also written with a minimum of 150 words.
Task two is similar for both types of tests. Candidates are generally asked to write an essay, the topic chosen from a variety of contexts. The minimum word limit of this task is 250 words.
IELTS Speaking:
The IELTS speaking test is a one-on-one interview style exam where the examiner asks the candidate a particular set of questions which is a combination of both short and long answer questions.
This is divided into three parts and the total time of the test is generally 12 to 15 minutes. In part one, the examiner asks the candidate about his life like his walk or studies, his hobbies, his family etc. in part two, the candidate is asked to speak on a topic for two minutes, for which they get one minute to prepare.
The candidate can also make notes during this one minute, and a notepad, as well as a pencil, is provided to the candidate for the same. In the last part, the examiner asks questions related to the topic of the cue card, which was asked in part two.
