Celebrating Disability Pride doesn’t require constant happiness or a picture-perfect life. Pride isn’t about pretending everything is easy—it’s about recognizing the strength, resilience, and identity that come from living with a disability, even on the hardest days. For many, disability includes chronic pain, fatigue, mental health struggles, or ongoing medical challenges. Acknowledging those realities doesn’t diminish pride—it deepens it. Disability Pride is about embracing who you are in a world that often fails to accommodate, understand, or respect disabled people. It’s the radical act of saying, “I matter,” even when society suggests otherwise. You can be proud of your body, your identity, and your journey, even when you’re struggling. Pride means honoring your limits, setting boundaries, and making space for rest—not pushing through at all costs. It’s also about community. Disability Pride reminds us that we are not alone. Our shared experiences connect us. In that solidarity, we find validation, joy, resistance, and strength. On days when fatigue takes over or emotions feel too heavy, pride may look quieter—it might mean surviving the day, reaching out for support, or simply allowing yourself to rest without shame. Ultimately, Disability Pride is not about erasing pain or hardship. It’s about asserting that we are whole and valuable not in spite of our disabilities, but with them. As we roll into Disability Pride Month, our #GlimmerOfTheWeek is the incredible journey of 19-year-old Viraj Dhanda, a non-verbal autistic teenager who recently gained acceptance into MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), one of the most prestigious institutions for STEM studies! Viraj's story highlights the critical need for accessibility and awareness for persons with disabilities. Unfortunately, societal assumptions and stigma often hinder disabled individuals from reaching their full potential. In his early years, Viraj was wrongly diagnosed with an intellectual disability and denied the space to thrive in school. It wasn't until he joined Fusion Academy Newton at age 13 that he truly began to flourish, thanks to educators who adapted to his unique learning and communication style. This serves as a powerful reminder that with the awareness, access and acceptance, every individual can break societal assumptions of their capacities! July marks Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate the resilience, contributions, and rights of people with disabilities. It's essential to recognize and honor the incredible advocates who have fought tirelessly for disability justice. One such beacon of hope is Judith Heumann, an iconic disability rights activist whose life work transformed both policy and perception surrounding disability. Judith, who utilized a wheelchair since childhood, played a pivotal role in the 504 Sit-in protest in 1977, advocating for the rights of disabled individuals in America. Her relentless pursuit for accessibility and inclusion has paved the way for many. As we celebrate this month, it's important to recognize and spotlight the voices of disabled individuals and acknowledge their experiences in all aspects of society—education, work, and community. Representation and visibility goes a long way in creating acceptance towards disabled bodies and lived experience. Equally inclusion is vital for creating a world where everyone can thrive, regardless of their abilities.
