24*365 Power supply from Solar Generation is now realizable for upto 97% of time for majority of the Sunny areas globally. To flatten the solar output for a desired 1kW constant supply for 24 hours can be achieved with as low as 17KWh of BESS capacity coupled with 5KW of solar PV panels. This is the conclusion of a recent study published by Ember on the techno-commercial feasibility of achieving 24*365 solar powered grid supported by optimized BESS capacity. As per the report, the modelling takes into account hourly solar generation across an year and then accounting for the optimized BESS sizing to evaluate the minimum battery sizing to achieve close to full transition to a solar powered grid. While there are edge cases associated with cloud cover and less solar generation due to inclined sun rays in winter, but for majority of sunny places on Earth a more than 90% reliability is easily achieved with the current BESS pricing and technology itself! This is indeed a significant implication on how the regulatory policy evolves in terms of solar tenders and grid infrastructure outlay. Firstly with a very less investment, a typical household or industry can transition to solar power and reducing grid reliance. All the excess power generated through rooftop solar can be stored to utilize during evening hours and achieving saving significant savings. For industries it can help in avoiding downtime due to power fluctuations and any penal charges for exceeding peak sanctioned load. Secondly from a grid infrastructure planning perspective, significant savings can be achieved as the same Transmission network, Sub-stations can support a much higher solar capacity duly aided by rapid growth in Decentralized BESS capacity. Thirdly the quantum of new coal to be added necessary for the Baseload expansion can come down. Whenever the grid faces supply deficit, BESS can kick in immediately by virtue of their rapid response thereby reducing the need for standby generators. Tender agencies like SECI are already seeing a rapid fall in the Round The Clock (RTC) prices due to declining battery prices. This study further validates that BESS is not just beneficial from a price consideration, but also increasingly covering a wide range of edge cases with optimized BESS sizing for baseload planning. This makes a strong case for transitioning to a grid powered by solar to as high as 99% of total load as further improvements keep happening in Battery technology in terms of Falling Prices, Improved Reliability and Higher Longevity. PURE welcomes the notification by CEA regarding the "Draft Central Electricity Authority (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) (First Amendment) Regulations, 2025." The notification appends an additional chapter Titled "Additional safety requirements for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)" which prescribes multiple redundant safety measures for both Design and Installation of the BESS systems. While the recommended measures are indeed comprehensive and well thought, some of the salient points that stand out are: 1) The battery system shall be designed with two-fault tolerance to prevent catastrophic failures under all conditions 2) Fire and explosion protection at Cell level, Module level, container level Implementation of these measures shall ensure that the emerging BESS industry is prioritizing the safety and ensuring the long term asset performance & protection. As BESS shall become a critical backbone of the National power grid, it is essential to have the right design and execution protocols being put up in place at the emerging phase itself. PURE has worked extensively on the battery Thermal Management System over the years through design and implementation of a customed Nano-PCM and having an elaborate focus on overall battery safety through advanced electronics and electro-mechanical design. “UPI For Energy” can be one of the biggest regulatory reforms that the power sector has seen and can be a true game changer for the growth of Distributed Power Generation and Storage sources. It will be a true coming of age moment for the decades of background work done in the Decentralized power generation especially solar rooftop and banking on top of the Digital Payment Infrastructure (UPI) built by India. As the Decentralized Solar Generation goes up, it needs a transparent and efficient price discovery market to be available to enhance solar project ROIs. For this market to take off, there is a need for a massive ramp up of Decentralized Energy Storage (BESS) which then allows the generators to optimize their PV and BESS capacity to take advantage of the Time of Day benefits. All the excess power not being consumed at generation nodes can be sold off to the right buyer at the right time of the day. In a highly regulated market where the DISCOM is the sole buyer for a Decentralized Generator through net metering and with critical bottlenecks in the Transmission Infrastructure there is significant potential for wastage of power. Even as the installed capacity keeps increasing, but due to lack of a fair price discovery market and power evacuation capacity in terms of Transmission Lines, Transformers, there is likely to be significant curtailment in the coming years due to the phenomena known as Duck Curve Effect. Similarly there is a significant growth in the Electric Vehicles market which will create additional demand for power but needs the right charging support. To the contrary a Decentralized Power Market will boost the local grid level investment in both the PV installation and the Battery Energy Storage. It can then be utilised smartly to sell power at the right time and quantity. With the falling cost of Solar and BESS this can create several micro entrepreneurs who will utilize their existing real estate to create an additional source of income. To summarize the following key aspects need to be designed properly for the realization of “UPI for Energy”: - Significant Investment in Digitization for Smart Grids for demand/ supply matching - Creation of a Fair, Transparent, Secure, Decentralized Marketplace for selling and buying power - Right Policy Support in a Sector which is traditionally Heavily Regulated - Right Incentives for Promotion of PV and BESS at the Decentralized Level This can ensure a much faster Decarbonization of Grid even with optimized investment in Transmission Infrastructure and by supporting local micro entrepreneurship. #BESS #UPIforEnergy #SmartGrid #PV
