Here are some eye-opening insights from his session related to myths and misconceptions discussed: -Buildings of the same size in different locations have the same level of lightning protection. -External lightning protection systems do not guarantee protection for all internal electrical and electronic equipment. -Lightning causes damage only if it directly strikes a building. -The Protection Angle Method uses a fixed angle of 45 degrees, regardless of air terminal height. -Lightning tends to strike the tallest structure in an area, influencing the need for lightning protection. -Fuse, MCB, and Stabilizer alone cannot fully protect electronic equipment from lightning surges. -Earth resistance decreases with longer electrodes, emphasizing the importance of proper earthing. -Dedicated earthing for Lightning Protection Systems (LPS) is crucial and should not be interconnected with other earthing systems. -Earth grid resistance in substations should ideally be maintained below 1 ohm. Ensuring Resilience: Lightning Protection for Secure Polling Booths As the #democratic process unfolds in India across seven phases, spanning over 40 days, ensuring the security of our polling booths is of utmost importance. One crucial aspect to prioritize is safeguarding the #infrastructure, specifically focusing on protecting the security cameras responsible for monitoring the integrity of the voting process and ensuring the security of the #voting machines post-voting. Following recent developments, there have been reports of #CCTV camera failures where #EVM machines are stored attributed to lightning surges. Additionally, we’ve received inquiries from a few polling booths where lightning struck, prompting a search for protective measures. These incidents underscore the #vulnerability of essential equipment to #nature's fury and the urgent need for #robust lightning protection solutions. Not only the direct lightning strikes cause such damages but also the surges due to lightning are destructive. Lightning strikes can induce both direct and indirect effects, leading to equipment malfunction, data loss, and, in worst-case scenarios, structural damage. Understanding the mechanisms behind these failures is crucial. Lightning #surges can overwhelm unprotected systems, causing power surges that damage sensitive components, including cameras and associated electronics. Moreover, these surges can induce #electromagnetic interference, disrupting signal transmission and compromising surveillance capabilities. Implementing comprehensive lightning protection measures that protect against direct and indirect effects are imperative to mitigate this risk. This includes #airterminals, down conductors, #grounding systems and surge protection devices to dissipate and divert #lightning energy safely.
