Opening the incoming ball valve at a fast speed, creates those pressure spikes which are responsible for various damages like distortion of diaphragm support plate, internal moving parts in the regulator, compensation diaphram etc. This happens because, by opening the ball valve rapidly we do not allow the pressure regulator enough time to react and take corrective action to control the outlet pressure. Not only the Inlet ball valve to the gas train, but every ball valve which is used as a isolation valve for a control, safety or a monitoring device has to be opened very gradually. Closing can be done at whatever speed you want.
It is of utmost importance to open ball valves correctly to prevent a sudden influx of fuel gas into the train. Such an influx can create a high-pressure surge, which may momentarily subject downstream components to excessive pressures. These surges could also trigger the slam shut-off valve unnecessarily, leading to the shutdown of the gas train. In certain cases, they could even cause damage to the gas pressure regulator. When opening a ball valve, it is advisable to do so very slowly, initially opening it around 10-15%. This allows a small amount of fuel gas to flow gradually, filling the space ahead of the ball valve. Maintain the ball valve in a partially opened position for approximately 10-15 seconds to allow the pressures upstream and downstream of the ball valve to balance and equalize gradually. After the aforementioned duration, slowly open the ball valve to its fully open position. It is crucial to adhere to this operational practice each time you open or close any ball valve in the gas train.
