Jagjit Singh Walia- The producer of film- The End of Bandit Queen.

The life of Sher Singh Rana, who shot dacoit Phoolan Devi on July 25, 2001, will make it to celluloid. Fascinatingly, Rana who is at present locked up in Tihar Jail, New Delhi, has himself written the characters. Says producer Jagjeet Singh Walia, “Rana has written the story for the film because he Wanted to make people conscious of the fact that he has not only avenged the murder of 22 people by the Bandit Queen, but has also gifted his society (upper caste of Kshatriya Rajput Thakurs) freedom and pride.”

Titled The End of Bandit Queen, the movie will be complete on a budget of Rs. 50 crore. “Bollywood actors have been approach for the movie and the director will choose actors according to the roles. Meeting is on with Rituparna Sengupta and other names will be announced soon,” adds Walia.

Co-accused in the Phoolan Devi murder case, Parveen Mitttal and Amitabh Rathi, who are out on bail presently, have also helped the producer in researching for the plan. In Feb 2004, Rana made a daring flee from the high security Tihar Jail. He was rearrested in 2007 from Kolkata.

“Everybody in Tihar Jail right from the police to people who handle cells cooperated with us during our investigate. Even the courts helped us,” says Walia.

Allegedly, after the flee, Rana had gone to Afghanistan to trace the tomb of the 12th century Kshatriya king Prithviraj Chauhan. Other than Afghanistan, the film will also trace the exploits of Rana through locales in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Dubai and Bangladesh. Shooting for the Hindi and English language film is programmed to start in September and it is slated for a 2012 release.
