Management of acute and chronic kidney failure

Kidney failure, also known as renal insufficiency or renal failure, is an acute (sudden in onset) or chronic (slowly progressive) medical condition of impaired kidney function in which the kidneys fail to filter metabolic wastes from the blood adequately.

Dialysis (both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis)

Dialysis is an artificial replacement for lost renal function in people with kidney failure. It is a process for removing waste products (water and cellular metabolites) from the body compartments. It is further divided into hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis

• Hemodialysis is a process of purifying (removal of waste products such as creatinine and urea and free water) from the blood of a person whose kidneys are not working normally.

• Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a type of dialysis that uses the peritoneum in a person's abdomen as the membrane through which waste substances are exchanged with the blood. It is used to remove excess fluid, remove toxins and correct electrolyte problems in those with kidney failure

Fistulogram

Fistulogram is a procedure to view an AV fistula. It is a simple test which is done to detect problems associated with AV fistula and grafts. It is done by injecting a fluorescent dye into the fistula and visualizing it under X ray imaging.

Percutaneous balloon angioplasty

It is a minimally invasive, procedure to widen narrowed or obstructed arteries or veins. It is the procedure done wherein a small high-pressure inflatable balloon is used to treat access related problems like narrowing, blockage, etc.

Stenting

It is a minimally-invasive procedure whereby a self-expanding meshwork of stainless steel/nitinol is used to treat narrowing of blood vessels seen in dialysis patients.

Thrombectomies of AV fistula/ graft

Thrombectomy is an emergency procedure performed to remove a thrombus (clotted blood) from the clogged arteries or veins.

Dialysis catheters

A dialysis catheter is an instrument used for exchanging blood to and from a patient and a hemodialysis machine. There are two types of dialysis catheters. Temporary catheters and tunneled permanent catheters and their placement depend on several local and remote factors.
